MEDIATION

A mediator is a neutral third party who helps people in conflict resolve their dispute outside of court.  As mediators, we offer support in the following ways:

  • Helping individuals communicate effectively in the midst of conflict
  • Facilitating creative out-of-the-box solutions
  • Providing legal information, where appropriate
  • Helping parties navigate court processes and "red tape," including paperwork
  • Drafting written agreements, including Marital Settlement Agreements

Mediation offers people in conflict the opportunity to work through challenging issues, and our office emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and non-judgmental space for difficult conversations to occur. We combine empathy with pragmatism in order to open the door to creative solutions, and help parties reach the kinds of workable agreements that allow those involved to move on with their lives. Those parties who remain in contact after the dispute has been resolved - such as co-parents and family members - often find that mediation has enhanced their ability to communicate effectively with one another going forward.

Mediation is a completely voluntary process, and continues only so long as each party chooses to participate.  Whether and to what extent attorneys are involved in the mediation process is up to the parties. Mediation is also confidential, which means that in the unlikely event that litigation does occur, conversations that take place as part of the effort to reach settlement cannot be repeated in court.
